Gadgets while at work

I just couldn’t help but repost this one.  Today’s Dilbert, I think we have all experienced at the office.  Perhaps even the words “oooo shiny!” have been uttered.

I fully blame the invention of RSS Feeds for lost productivity.  (While also bowing to their greatness.)

Microsoft Surface Table

Posted by: Jake  :  Category: SGB Gadgets

Saw this a little while ago on the “Geeks are Sexy” blog.  Kiltak did a post on it and linked to the demo videos for us.

I though just haven’t seen enough to decide if it would really work as promised.  For one, I don’t see a single drink shown with ice in it.  Also - as a former bartender, you learn that point to ask your customers for more drinks.  If it is slow enough that you have time to be checking a monitor for everyones drink level, there is probably something you should be cleaning.

That whole part aside - it is actually pretty neat.  If they get towards a production product I will be quite interested to see what sort of bars it would go into.

Deskstop Space - Wet dream

CineMassive OmegaPlex: 27.6 million pixels for $12,995 - Engadget

My first thought when seeing this come up in my reader this morning… if I get a divorce, sell the house, and get a really cheap apartment… could I afford it?  While that answer may be debatable, I am pretty sure my wife and dog wouldn’t appreciate getting kicked out for it.  That being said, this is freaking awesome.

Multi-monitor rigs are always fun.  I myself never go less than duals, but do miss having 3-4 chained across a couple of different PC’s using synergy.

Skype Goes Verball

Posted by: Thatedeguy  :  Category: SGB Gadgets

Ever wanted a talking internet telephone?  Of course you have.

VerballsWell, let me introduce you to the Verballs.  These animated little characters move wave their arms all around when you receive a Skype call and then move their mouths to mimic the speech of whomever you are speaking with.

The website has five different varieties and it looks like they will be widely available on September 1 2006.  Each has his/her own story that can be played via the flash interface on the website.  Get all five and rotate depending on who you’re talking with!  The looks are close enough, it could be almost like talking to Jake in person!

Thanks to The Red Ferret Journal for the pointer.

Laser Saber

Posted by: Thatedeguy  :  Category: SGB Gadgets

LaserSaberJust when you thought those chinzy, three ‘C’ cell batteries required, light saber replicas were the closest you’d ever get to being a card carrying member of the Light or Dark side.  Enter the Light Laser Saber.  Now you can be as Jedi as you want.

Laser SaberThe site and the pricing still seem to be in the works, but the concept is certainly there.  Each is hand made.  The light source is a Wicked Laser in either Green or Red. It would appear that the lasersaber will use the classic green and the pulsar red lasers and not the blue lasers as the blue laser only comes in the more expensive options at Wicked.

On a bummer! note, the laser saber does not come with sound effects, so the trademark SHHOOOZZZ and SHIIZZ will still have to be made by your Jedi sound effect system.

So, what are you waiting for?  Head on over to lasersaber.com and get yourself on the list.  They’re still on a first come first serve basis, so the faster you email, the better.

A PC in every room

Posted by: Thatedeguy  :  Category: SGB Gadgets

Engadget is reporting an actual proof of concept for the JackPC.

JackPC Quite the little doo-dad.  It’s capable of being powered by power-over-ethernet which might just work out well since it only has 64 MB of flash memory and 128MB of RAM to work with.  Still, it runs Windows CE, Citrix ICA, Windows RDP and even comes with Internet Exploder Explorer 6 pre-installed and ready to run.  And did I mention that it runs a 500Mhz AMD RISC processor?

There’s more power in this little wall jack PC than there was in most computers 7 years ago!  The ChipPC JackPC should be available middle of June and the price estimate is at $392.

Sporting a 1920 X 1200 resolution 20″ widescreen, the Lieberman Olympus notebook is one monster of a laptop.  The rest of the specs are nothing to cough at either.

Of course, we here at SuperGeek would love to get our hands on something like this to test out.  We can only imagine the fun we would have giving this things tires a kick.

Win a HP Compaq Tablet TC1100

Posted by: Thatedeguy  :  Category: SGB Gadgets, SGB News

Palm Addicts is putting on a contest of sorts. A user will be picked at random from the people who post onto the palm addicts forums between today and the end date. What’s the end date you ask?

we will keep this little contest open for a few weeks

Awfully cryptic isn’t it. Well, if you aren’t already a user, go sign up and make some posts to the forums. It does seem to be weighted by how many posts a user makes, so the more you make the better your chances.

Sounds like an invitation for a lot of unnecessary post on the forums to me. If I were a normal user of the forums, I’d be a little mad about that, but obviously they feel the response from outside the community won’t be that great. We’ll see.

Introducing the iMac… I mean Compaq B2800

Posted by: Thatedeguy  :  Category: SGB Gadgets, SGB Reviews, SGB Tech

Compaq b2800Aside from the fact that this looks like something out of a milk bar in “A Clockwork Orange”, why is it that everyone insists on imitating the iMac and iPod designs? Is it because they are so popular? And why white? Seems like I’d spend most of my days cleaning the damn thing instead of using it.

Seriously folks, here’s a review of the Compaq B2800, which is only available in Asia and Australia. Any Aussies wanna send us one to toy with? Didn’t think so.

With a super slim profile, a 14″ screen, and weighing in at only 4.8 lbs, the B2800 sounds like a pretty serious traveling laptop.

That doesn’t seem to mean that it is a cheapo machine either. Sturdy case design, a 1.7 or 2 ghz Pentium M 740, up to 1.5 gigs of DDR2/533 Ram, and a dedicated graphics card mean this could become a favorite for all around usage. Fan Specs and screen size may limit it from ever being a gamers machine, but for a multi purpose, portable, this one may take a few cakes. Here’s a few snippets from the review to whet your appetite:

Another nice touch is the fact that all the LED lights are in blue that combines nicely with the white scheme found on the rest of the notebook. The LED’s show the status of the System Power, NUM Lock, CAPS Lock, Battery charging, HDD/Optical activity (in one LED, but the optical drive has its own orange LED on the tray) and WiFi.

The screen is one of the week points of this notebook. For some reason it isn’t a widescreen, but it is true that widescreen have taken a bit longer to be adopted in Asian notebook models, except by Sony. But still, at this day in age they should offer this notebook with a widescreen.

The results are what you would expect from a Pentium M 740 machine. It is much faster than my old Pentium 4 HP notebook and is also a bit more responsive than my AMD Athlon XP 2000+ desktop. It is more than fast enough for nearly anything you would ask of it. If you want further speed you could also buy a faster CPU model like the Pentium M 760.

Origami in a Sling!

Posted by: Thatedeguy  :  Category: SGB Gadgets, SGB News

Sling Media, makers of the ever popular SlingPlayer software announced the addition of software for the UMPC market yesterday.

“The Ultra-Mobile PC represents an exciting new category of mobile devices and we are thrilled to be working with Microsoft to support this new product line,” said Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of Sling Media, Inc. “Consumers are looking for differentiated, highly mobile product solutions as part of the digital lifestyle, and the combination of Slingbox and Ultra-Mobile PC delivers a portable and affordable solution to meet their entertainment needs.”

That function alone would make the UMPC(”ORIGAMI”) worth buying. Imagine having a UMPC that would allow you to watch your tv and such from the convienence of where ever you are! I love it.
