Why Windows Vista Won’t Suck

Extreme Tech has an excellent post on the features of Vista and why they feel that Everyone will want to upgrade this time around. Or do they?

We know we titled this piece “Why Windows Vista Won’t Suck” and that’s a big statement to make. To be honest, we don’t know that it’s going to be great just yet. The OS is still very much in beta, and if previous Microsoft operating systems are any indication, a whole lot of things come together in the last few months. As such, we certainly can’t recommend you set aside some upgrade money right now.

Seems that they can’t quite make up their minds.  They do finish off with some good notes though.

Still, it’s hard to take a real look at Vista, both on the surface and under the hood, and consider it just another Windows rehash. This is a dramatic, whole-hog upgrade of the Windows platform. If you got anything out of this article, we hope it’s the realization that Vista is not simply the Windows XP/2000 code base that has been slowly evolving over the years with some fancy graphics and icons slapped onto it. It should be clear that Vista is really the next generation of operating system from Microsoft, every bit as significant as the leap from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 or the jump from Mac OS 9 to OS X.

I wrote before on Why I want Windows Vista and all this has done is concreted the problem.  Now I just have to figure out how to afford the upgrade…

Microsoft unveils Windows Vista times 6

Microsoft unveiled the six, yep six, versions of it’s upcoming Windows product.  Vista is set to release late this year.  The six versions were noted as:

  1. Vista Business
  2. Vista Enterprise
  3. Vista Home Basic
  4. Vista Home Premium
  5. Vista Ultimate
  6. Vista Starter

Two different versions for Business and four for Home use.  Each with various changes that make them a little lesser or better than the other.  Does anyone else think that Microsoft is taking this licensing bit a tad too far?

HAL 9000 - Now USB?

I got a kick out of seeing this device:

It is actually a pretty good deal. $69.99 on ThinkGeek, though it looks like it went out of stock pretty quick. A 1gb USB flashdrive. “Well order it!” “I can’t do that Dave… it is out of stock.”

Professional Gaming league gets funding

WSJ.com (via slashdot) is reporting that Major League Gaming has received $10 million in funding to help with it’s efforts to become a professional sports league.  Holy Buckets!  I knew there was money in the industry, but a professional league of gamers?

I’m sure that there are some people out there that think this is a great idea.  I can only force myself to agree if it develops into more of a standards body than a NFL or NBA like entity.  The implications are impressive though.  Think about the Jocks at your local college being usurped by the top draft pick for the MLG.  Maybe even actual League advocated teams…

Read the Slashdot discussion for some very interesting commentary from a few different points of view or start a discussion in the comments here.

Ford Developing 60mpg pickup

Ford announced that they are developing a Hybrid pickup that is expected to get 60 mpg.

Hybrid Ford HydraulicThe standard F-150 has a curb weight of about 4800 lbs., which is 65% greater than theToyota Prius, yet incredibly the Hydraulic F-150 with a continuously variable transmission matches the Prius with 60mpg city rating, that’s an amazing 400% increase over its gasoline version.

Appearantly, Ford is hoping to launch the Hydraulic F-150 in August of 2008. Because of structure and positioning, the Hydraulic technology that is implemented here is best suited to larger vehicles like the F-150. Smaller vehicles will have a hard time implementing the system.

Is Apple going to give up on OSX?

I normally do not agree with John C. Dvorak. However, in his latest article entitled “Will Apple Adopt Windows?” he argues that Apple will adopt windows and that Steve Jobs will make it acceptable.  I couldn’t agree more.

At some point, I believe that Apple will find that the cost to develop new hardware and software is too much.  With the recent history of the iPod making Apple a lot more of a hardware company, the move will become obvious.   Chances are that it will still be a few years before Apple starts the “switch”, but it will happen.

I even have a fancy advert slogan for them.  “What’s Windows doing in an Apple?  Things it has never done before…”

MS Office Live Beta launches. Where’s Office?

Official news release.  But where’s the office? I don’t know about you but when I think of Microsoft Office, I think Word, Access, Excel and the like.  So shouldn’t Office Live be online versions of those apps?  We aren’t the only ones that thought so. Kent Newsome thought the same. Heck, even Microsoft’s own Robert Scoble thought so.

Aside from the surprising lack of what we all accept as Office applications, Office live looks to be a pretty nice service.  An online hub aimed at Small Businesses that allows for a domain and email services, Office live is pointed in the right direction.  Jake and I happened to receive a couple of beta keys and will be testing Office live over the next few weeks.  We’ll put up a review as soon as we get a good bearing on how it all works and how well it works at the beta stage.

Vonage joins the big boys

Vonage filed with the SEC for a Initial Public Offering today.  Estimated at $250 million. Mark Evans has some interesting comments on it all.  I agree with him.  It is about time.

While I think it was smart of them to wait as long as they did, which by the way is why I don’t think we are seeing a bubble just yet, I have been impatiently waiting to see what a Vonage IPO would be valued at.  Probably a little lighter than I would have imagined, but stil not bad.  Mark points out that they even mention that they want to use some of the proceeds for purchases.  Maybe a little streamlining of the VOIP market is in order.  Should be fun to watch.

IBM Unveils 4-5 Ghz Processors

IBM unveiled the newest line of PowerPC processors today.  The PowerPC6.

Bucking a trend in the chip industry, IBM Corp. said Tuesday its upcoming Power6 microprocessor for servers will run at unprecedented speeds while keeping a lid on power requirements and heat.

The chips are expected to run in the 4-5 Ghz range.  The multi-core chips also are touted to run on less power than the most common competitor, the Pentium 4.  I can’t imagine having a machine that runs that fast.  Doesn’t mean I don’t want one though.
